Key Points from Focus on… Habits and Building Better Routines

You cannot be what you cannot see (Marian Wright Edelman)

“Actions follow being” Aristotle – what are you going to be?

“Success is actually a short race – a sprint fuelled by discipline just long enough for habit to kick in and take over” (Keller & Papasan)

A Habit is….. A routine or practice performed regularly, an automatic response to a specific situation.

Action habits – when its [time] when I’m [place] I will

Habits are behavioural auto pilots

The power of routines is that they ensure that we use as little conscious energy as possible where it is not absolutely necessary, leaving us free to strategically focus the energy available to us in creative, enriching ways.

Routine sets your body on auto-pilot – and we can have a routine – a strategy when in each of the gears – so things happen with the minimum of cognitive and emotional effort

“We don’t rise to the level of our goals, we fall to the level of our systems” -James Clear
